An opportunity for Christian Youth in Kuching to perform their own composed songs and choreographed dance.

About MC

The first Musical Celebration was held in Miri in early June 2010 which was organized by SIB Miri District committee. The event was organized at Miri Civic Center in early June 2010. The response from the local participants was overwhelming. Therefore, this year, Kuching youth is inspired to organize such event in Kuching.

Musical Celebration is created as a platform for the youth to present their creativity composed gospel songs and own choreographed modern dance. There are needs for the younger generation to be given opportunities to express their faith through music and dance.  It is also to cope with the secular trend which offers many platforms and opportunities for them to express themselves.

Awards will be given to the gospel bands and dance groups that show the best performance through judges and note by public decision.

This event promotes healthy competition among the youth as it does not solely to compete but also as an appreciation towards their creativity and efforts. The event will start off with the competition straight away but with a session of praise and worship lead by invited team. The event will ends with another session of praise and worship together with the committee members and sharing God’s words by the invited speaker. This event will provide positive venue for the youth to develop expose their talents and socializing.

Nowadays, secular music is widely exposed to its audience. It can be heard through many channels such as commercial break, radio and the internet. Thus, people are easily influenced by the music especially the youngsters.

Besides, in the secular world, many events are organized to attract people’s attention towards this kind of music such as concerts or battles of the bands. Nevertheless, such events conducted by Christian organizations are almost non-existent. As a result, young people prefer to attend those events which involve secular music. Therefore, through Musical Celebration, we believe we can open opportunities and build platforms for those who are eager to share their talents in music and dance.

Congratulations to the initiators and organisers of this event. Very thoughtful of them to provide an alternative platform for the Christians to reduce influence of the secular entertainment.

Nevertheless, it’s sad to read statements that announce “It is also to cope with the secular trend which offers many platforms and opportunities for them to express themselves.” The Holy Bible in Romans 12:2 states that we should not be conformed to the trends, lifestyles, and standards of the world. The New Living Translation states “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world….” The Amplified Bible version states “Do not be conformed to this world (this age), [fashioned after and adapted to its external, superficial customs]….” So, to read a major statement in the description of this event “…to cope with the secular trend…” is indeed sad, because this is not what God wants us to do. We should make a statement to the world and not the world make a statement in our lives.

Unearthing of God given talents and gifts have always been part of the church life and programs for a very long time. All those programs and events that we used to organize in conjunction with special occasions have unearthed many talents and gifts. Many of the talented singers in the Western entertainment world were formerly gospel singers unearthed at church programs and events (who have now failed to shine as Christian lights). Sadly, now we have to move in the tune of worldly events to unearthed Christian musicians and talents. So, what will happen after this competition? Will the participants be given opportunities to become recording artists?

I believe this event would continue to grow in the years to come especially that the strong influence the secular entertainment has on our young Christians. And I personally believe that it will grow beyond music bands and dances, into other creative presentations. So, in the future, instead of this being competition, let it be a celebration of praise and worship that welcomes musicians, dancers, and other talented and creative “artists” to come and share their God-given talents and gifts. Create a central theme for the presentations, and at the end of the day (event), let it be a day and time to glorify God and celebrate His greatness.

Whether we like it or not, being human in flesh, competition creates pride, feeling of greatness, animosity, selectiveness, and many a times with hurt and frustration. It is the rulers of the Gentiles and high officials who practice greatness (Matt. 20:25). In Christ kingdom, there is no one person greater than the other, except for for those who serve and give their lives for others (Matt. 20:26-28). So, if there is to be greatness among these talented people, let it be because they have served the others through their God-given talents and gifts, and not through competitions adjudged by men.

One day, a wise and humble Christian found a precious stone while on a walk on the countryside praising and glorifying God.

The next day, again on her walk, she met a traveler who was hungry, and the Christian woman opened her bag to share her food. The hungry traveler saw the precious stone and asked the woman to give it to him. She did so without hesitation.

The traveler left rejoicing in his good fortune. He knew the stone was worth enough to give him security for a lifetime. But, a few days later, he came back to return the stone to the wise woman.

“I’ve been thinking,” he said. “I know how valuable this stone is, but I give it back in the hope that you can give me something even more precious. Give me what you have within you that enabled you to give me this stone.”

I truly pray and hope we’ll not conform our lifestyles to the patterns, trends, and lifestyles of the world, but rather let us make a statement to the world by continuing to be different. Let’s make a statement to the world, with who’s inside us, in whatever we do.

Congratulations to the organizing team and hopefully this will turn into an event that glorifies God without conforming to the patterns of the world.

    • Hai Bro Jaya,
Thanks for your comment. =) As an organizing committee, we have noted this all this while and all the issues you stated in the comment. And, yes it’s true. Even, not to say competition, even ordinary when every churches come together and perform in one occasion, pride will always come in, inner competition will always in too. But, here…we already stated in our form and objectives that positive competition will take place, where all the young or youth will have the positive competition to build their skills, talents and gift in ministry =) We are focusing to Praise and Worship method and not contemporary too.. =) and i really appreciated your comments too bro for these comments will help us to be extra cautious and prayerfully that God’s grace and work take place. instead of our desire =)

      With Love
